Behind: Make-A-Wish Singapore Christmas Collaboration

Hihi, its been quite sometime since my last blog post due to my hectic schedule of projects and exams. In fact, I have 3 final exams next week. 😢 However, today’s post is very unique as it brings you behind-the-scenes beyond Minty Roses and to our Christmas Collaboration beneficiary: Make-A-Wish Singapore.

I would like to thank Make-A-Wish Singapore for agreeing to this collaboration and also my 3 other makers (@draw_yinggzzz, @budgetdaises and @sticker.mstudio) who made my dream Christmas gift set a reality 💗. So, without further ado let’s jump into the short interview I did with Jeneve, the Director for Community Partnership!

1. What makes Make-A-Wish different from other wish granting organizations?

Make-A-Wish Singapore is part of the world’s largest wish granting organisation and the only wish granting organisation of its kind in Singapore. We believe that each wish experience should be as unique and special as the child who wished for it. Make-A-Wish Singapore strives not to combine wishes or involve more than one wish child at a time on the same wish plan in order to make each wish experience unforgettable and life-changing. The positive impact of a wish lasts long after the wish is granted, and spreads to everyone involved in making the wish come true.

2. How long does a usual wish journey take?

The wish journey from wish capture, wish design, wish anticipation and wish realisation takes an average of 8 - 10 months.

3. Is there any follow-up after wish realisation with the beneficiaries?

We do stay in touch with our wish children and families through special events and activities. Our annual Santa Run for Wishes and Christmas Wish Party are the two most eagerly anticipated events. This year, we have revamped the occasion to a virtual event and the aim is for participants together with our wish children and families to collectively cover 21,517km - the distance from Singapore to the North Pole, the putative home of Santa Claus, and bring Santa Claus to Singapore. Santa and friends will be on wheels to deliver Christmas gift to our wish children islandwide, with safe distancing of course!

4. How has the covid-19 situation impacted the operations for Make-A-Wish wish granting?

We have adapted fast and immediately worked to find creative ways to bring smiles to our wish children. We continued to engage them by having virtual parties, sending little surprises via post, letters, video call and more - we never left our wish children’s side. The wish journey were extended with assurance to our wish children that their wishes will be granted, keeping check of the psychological impact on our wish children. These illnesses do not stop due to Covid-19, but the hope and renewed strength that a fulfilled wish can bring are essential to a child’s healing. With the extended wish journey, our programme cost has increased but donation has dropped significantly due to the impact of Covid-19.

5. What are the future plans for Make-A-Wish?

The hope and renewed strength that a fulfilled wish can bring are essential to a child’s healing. We are championing more public awareness on the impact of a wish on both mental and physical health. We hope more medical professionals in Singapore will include a wish as part of the medical treatment journey for every child with critical illnesses.

I hope these questions allowed you to have a deeper understanding of Make-A-Wish Singapore and 25% all profits from our Christmas Gift Sets will be donated to them. Please do support this initiative to light up the children’s Christmas 🎄 !

Lots of love,

Stay Unique. Stay Asteriaordinary.
